Page 8 Seagate Technology support services D List of Figures Figure 1. Medalist Pro family drive Page Figure 2. D Medalist Pro drives use a dedicated landing zone at the innermost radius of the media to eliminate the possibil- ity of destroying or degrading data by landing in the data zone.

The drive automatically goes to the landing zone when power is removed. D Unformatted and formatted capacities Formatted capacity depends on the number of spare reallocation sectors reserved and the number of bytes per sector. The following table shows the standard OEM model read capacity data. D Notes for Section 4. Maximum times are specified over the worst case conditions of temperature, voltage margins and drive orientation.

D host. There shall be no more than one recoverable seek errors in 10 physical seek operations. Provision shall be made by the system such that a device being inserted makes power and ground connections prior to the connection of any device signal contact to the bus. D Product repair and return information Seagate customer service centers are the only facilities authorized to service Seagate drives. Seagate does not sanction any third-party repair facilities.

Any unauthorized repair or tampering with the factory seal voids AC power requirements None. DC power requirements The voltage and current requirements for a single drive are shown in the following table. Values indicated apply at the drive power connector. D pleted and that the drive is able to accept selection by the host initiator.

This condition occurs when the Motor Start Option is enabled and the drive has not yet received a Start Motor command. The current during the various times is as shown: Power is applied to the drive. T1 - Controller self tests are performed and spindle position sense is performed. Typical power dissipation under idle con- ditions is Page Figure 4. This specification assumes that the drive is packaged in the shipping container designed by Seagate for use with drive.

Page Relative Humidity Disc drives shipped as loose load not palletized general freight will be packaged to withstand drops from heights as defined in the table below. Page Figure 5. D Note. Use four screws two per side when using the mounting holes located on the sides of the drive. See Section 8. Figure 5. Page Air Cleanliness Air cleanliness The drive is designed to operate in a typical office environment with minimal environmental control.

D Mechanical specifications The following nominal dimensions are exclusive of the decorative front panel accessory. However, dimensions of the front panel are shown in figure below. Refer to Figures 6, 7, and 8 for detailed mounting configuration dimensions. Page Figure 7. Max screw length into side of drive 0.

Screw tightening torque 6. Page Figure 8. D Defect and error management The drive, as delivered, complies with this specification. The read error rate and specified storage capacity are not dependent upon use of defect management routines by the host initiator. If necessary see Section 10 for Seagate support services telephone numbers. Page Figure 9. Page Figure Jumper Plug enlarged to show detail Drive Front Figure Default is jumper installed. D Drive orientation The balanced rotary arm actuator design of the drive allows it to be mounted in any orientation.

All drive perfor- mance characterization, however, has been done with the drive in horizontal discs level and vertical drive on its side orientations, and these are the two preferred mounting orientations. Page Drive Mounting Note.

Before mounting the drive in any kind of 3. D Interface requirements This section describes Medalist Pro interface requirements. General description This section partially describes the interface requirements as implemented on the drives. D Table 7 lists the Standard Inquiry command data that the drive should return to the initiator per the format given in the SCSI Interface Manual part number , section 5.

D Table 8 shows the Vital Product Data pages for the drives of this product manual. Also, some controllers treat the internal and external chains as separate logical buses. This means you may need to terminate both the first and last devices on both logical buses to achieve proper termination. If necessary, refer to your system or controller documentation to see how this is handled in your particular system. Terminator power You usually will not need to change this option and can normally leave the drive configured as it was shipped from the factory.

For information about how to change the terminator power option on your drive, refer to the appropriate drive-specific section. A maximum of 8 devices can be connected on an 8-bit wide data bus, and a maximum of 16 devices can be connected on a bit wide data bus. N drives Terminating the drive N model drives are terminated with permanently mounted IC active terminators.

If you install one of these drives and it is not on the end of the SCSI bus, disable the terminators by removing the jumper TE from pins 15 and 16 of connector J2. If you install the drive on the end of the SCSI bus, enable termination by installing a jumper on pins 15 and 16 of connector J2. Terminator power There are four possible terminator power TP configurations for N model drives. You will not normally need to change this option and can leave the drive configured as it was shipped from the factory.
